What training do you need for gang intervention work?

• Documented training in gang dynamics, de-escalation, and counseling approaches — something with a certificate, hours, and a curriculum outline.
• Background clearance for jail, prison, or juvenile hall volunteering.
• Supervised hours: chaplaincy volunteering, mentoring, group facilitation, or reentry casework.
• Credibility with the population — the ability to speak plainly without either fear or imitation.

Chaplains and ministry volunteers who counsel inside facilities; correctional officers and counselors who want intervention skills rather than only custody skills; juvenile hall and group-home staff; school counselors and youth pastors; probation, reentry, and social workers; and parents of at-risk youth.

A certificate of completion documents that you finished a defined curriculum and passed its assessments. It is not a state license and does not authorize clinical practice. For volunteer files, ministry records, agency training logs, and resumes, it is exactly the kind of documentation asked for.

• Ask who wrote it and what they actually did — years inside a facility matter more than academic citations.
• Ask whether it teaches a repeatable counseling framework or only background theory.
• Ask whether it is built for the correctional setting, or written for a classroom.
• Check that the certificate names the hours of instruction; agency training logs need that number.
